Partly Sunny

When I returned back to L.A. it was all go, go, go with work and my internship and classes. There was also a bit of a crisis with a friend who is quite ill and wasn't getting any help. I basically spent my days working or going to either my internship or class and then to the hospital to see her. It was a really stressful couple of weeks.

Great news did happen though, I received a letter from my husband's insurance company and I was covered for the whole surgery on my back. Everything. I cried. I couldn't help it, I've been waiting 9 years for this and now it was going to happen. My insurance wouldn't cover it but Joe's would. It made moving the wedding up so worth it. Now I have a date set. March 4th [EDIT: just got word today that we have to move it back to March 5 as my surgeon has to testify in a court case as an expert witness]. I cannot wait. I am also scared shitless. I had to sign a release that basically covers me having nothing change, me becoming paralyzed, and me dying. So fun to sign that. I also got myself a health directive just in case. Also not fun to fill out. Not my favorite thing that is for sure. Here's what I want if I am incapable of making decisions or I die. Woohoo, every 28 year old's dream!

The positive is that I am moving towards being well, towards not being debilitated by my shitty back. I am so excited and hopeful and positive things will go amazingly. I just don't want to pretend the other stuff doesn't exist too. So I am preparing as best I can for the surgery. What helps is I no longer am working (not by my choice). This is great for prepping but also really scary because we have no income from me coming in and I can't go on disability quite yet. So I am going to try for unemployment to cover this month of me not working. I told you chickens LOTS has been going on with me.

Joe and I are trying to make everything work budget wise, prep for my surgery, and continue on with our normal lives. I'm trying to hang out with loads of people before surgery happens and organize some stuff to do whilst I'm slightly immobilized for 3 months. Joe and my 7 year anniversary is coming up on 2/12 (and on 2/11/13 we'll have been married for 4 months, time is flying) so I want to do something special but also FREE (no job remember). So I am working on ideas for that as well. So much to do so little time.

Well that's enough for now, take care dear chickens!

Partly Cloudy continues

Hello Chickens! Back again to catch you up with my life. Thus continuing my story of Holidays with the Families:

We woke up the next day pretty early at 8:30/9 after about 4ish hours of sleep. We drove to Sagnasty Hospital and saw my sister and my little Mustache Man. Took some sweet pics with the little man and then we were on our way back down to see Joe's family. We hung out with them for the next few days until Christmas Eve afternoon. We met new girlfriends named K. (whom we like a lot!), watched tv, played games, played with the nephews Eli Jim & Ziggy (SO glad people took up this nickname that I gave last year-it's awesome!), slept on the queen sized air mattress with foam topper (pretty comfy), dealt with Zeb hating the nephews & worked on getting Eli Jim comfy with the pups by feeding Colonel treats [whom Eli called "the bwown one" which was SO cute], we cooked a little and ate a lot, drank tons of Vernors and some wine, and just enjoyed the company. All in all it was really lovely.

We drove to my folks' place Xmas Eve afternoon and ate dinner with everyone & after went to my brother J's house and hung out with him. There is a tiff in my immediate family right now with my brother J., my sister S. & her husband and my folks. It stems from the fistfight my brothers J. & M. had with each other at my sister S.'s wedding. It's still not resolved so he wasn't going to be at the Xmas celebration the next day so I wanted to be sure to spend some quality time with him. Joe & I had a blast just hanging out and drinking some beers and J. seemed to like his Xmas gifts from us. After we went over to my pal from high school parent's house. It was so nice to see her and her family. Though we were very late (12am) and I felt super bad about that. I loved seeing Ashley as she lives on the other side of the US and we don't get to hang out very often. Christmas was nice-loads of gifts for baby Mustache! Loads of food too! Joe & I received so many lovely gifts from both our families this past Xmas: new Scanpan for Joe [he is SO excited], a Food Network brand pasta pot with strainer, clothes for Joe, gift cards to Best Buy & Victoria's Secret & Barnes and Noble, loads of little kitchen accessories, cook books, pictures, nice bottles of wine, a compact, a down alternative king size comforter, and loads more. The next day all us gals went after Xmas shopping to hit up the deals and use all our gift cards.

Let's just say by the time this shopping was done Joe & I had to buy vacuum seal storage bags to fit everything into our car for the drive back! We then mostly hung out and kept things pretty chill other than a Girls Lunch at Cafe Zinc in my hometown, my Aunt & Uncle and her daughter & husband and their 5 little boys coming down to hang out [which was so much fun], driving up to see my grandparents which was lovely, driving to my cousin Beth's 2 girls' bday celebrations and seeing them sing and dance to gangham style (RIDICULOUS!), New Years hang outs with Joe's sibling L. & his gf K. and hanging with my pal from high school Ben-the-Wen-Hen, hanging with my brother M. and his girlfriend Taco down at their place the night before we left Michigan, and one last breakfast with my brother J. before we left to drive back to OKC to LA.

We had a really lovely time back in MI and got to see so many of our family and friends. There were SO many more we wish we could have spent time with too. It always feels like there is not enough time! I can say that for the most part too there were very few "debates" [a.k.a. heated discussions/arguments] with anyone on either sides of our families so that was great. We cannot wait to be back in October for our big wedding celebration-it should be a blast! :D

So now we're caught up on holiday time and we can move on to what's been happening more recently. Get ready for this next post it's a doozy! Lots of love dear chickens!

Partly Cloudy...

Dearest friends,

Where to start? So much has happened and is happening. I'll try to get it all in. First an apology for the long break. I really wanted to take time to enjoy the holidays in MI since I won't be back there until October when we do our big wedding shindig. I am sorry. And I know I've been lacking in the blogging department but I think we'll be cosy-ing up pretty regularly starting soon.

These posts are going to be split up a bit so you don't have to read a novel in one sitting. So to begin: Holidays with the Families.

We drove from L.A. to Oklahoma City and crashed a night, then drove OKC to Michigan to spend time with Joe's family. We got in really late and crashed on a full bed. Joe & I are 6'3" & 5'11 3/4" respectively and with a 30lb. beaglerrier and 14lb. terreagle it was a full bed for sure! :) We woke up and hung with his folks and siblings. Mostly just hanging out that day, we did open a joint bank account (which is WEIRD!). We had a big event in my hometown the next day so we decided since there was a snow storm coming to drive up that night before it hit.

The big event was my sister S. being induced to have her baby. We drove up to be there all day with her. Things went great from when they induced her at 9:30AM until about 10PM. Then hard contractions started happening and she was fully effaced & dilated almost to 10. The baby's heart rate dropped and they kicked us all out of the room. My parents, my sister G., Joe, and I all held our collective breaths. The doctor ran in with a "I'm going to have to have a heart to heart with this child" and we waited. A few minutes later everyone emerged saying the baby was fine & that she just needed to switch positions. My sister S. was crying hard, a few minutes ago she had been laughing and loving her epidural and talking about "everything is awesome, these drugs are awesome". She was scared for her baby boy. We tried to soothe her but how can you in moments like these? Then another rush of nurses as the baby's heart rate dropped again. Out to the hallway we march and hold our breaths once again. Then "Code Pink" was called and every nurse on that floor came out of the woodwork while blue lights flashed, the doctor was running to the room, a woman yelling about release forms came, we got pushed to a different area of the hallway, they rushed my sister and her husband past us, my sister S. was sobbing & her husband looked frightened, my parents and other sister G. broke down, someone tried to tell us to go to the waiting room as we planted outside the emergency surgery door, my Pops told them to get lost, we moved back from the doors and waited for answers. Someone came to us in the hallway and said that they were doing an emergency C-section and that all should be fine, when the doors opened I saw my sister's husband putting scrubs on over his clothes, he wasn't even in there with her.

We waited more. "My little sister might die, her baby might die" was all that was screaming through my head. My parents were crying, my little sister G. had disappeared to calm down and had reappeared, Joe looked panicked, I made a bargain with myself: "you need to hold it together until you see her, you can cry when you see her, DO NOT CRY UNTIL YOU SEE HER!". I don't believe in God, so I didn't pray. What I did was get very quiet, I took deep breaths, I squeezed my husband's hand, I told my parents not to panic and fear until we heard answers, I held my sister G.'s hand, I called out with every molecule in my body to the universe to make me strong enough to bear what came next and I asked projected out that my sister and her baby would be fine. I kept repeating that: "my sister and her baby will be fine and healthy, my sister an her baby will be fine and healthy, my sister and her baby will be fine and healthy, mysisterandherbabywillbefineandhealthy, my. sister. and. her. baby. will. be fine. and. healthy." over and over and over. I sneaked into the bathroom near the emergency surgery door and called my brothers who weren't there and told them or left voicemails telling them what was going on. I started to shake and could feel tears rising, I stuffed them back down reminding myself of my bargain not to cry until I saw her. I left the bathroom and rejoined my family.

We waited. It seemed like hours. A man came out with a name tag that said paternal care, his last name was pastor,  he walked to us. I felt a lump in my throat rise. I felt strangled. I couldn't breathe and I couldn't swallow. I braced myself. In the most monotone voice, with no expression on his face he said "Did you hear?", my mother started sobbing, we all leaned in frightened to this man whose badge read care and pastor, my father said "No.", the man said "Oh. They're fine, I'm so sorry, they're fine, I didn't mean to scare you". I thought my Pops was going to kill this man. Everyone breathed out. My parents hugged, my folks & sister started crying again, I hugged Joe, I said "thank you! THANK YOU!" to the universe/to god/buddah/allah/yaweh/ganesha/zeus/whoever! THANK YOU. We thanked the man and made it clear he should get fucking lost. We were all breathing again. We waited for the doctor to come out.

After many moments more the doctor came out, he said mama was fine & baby were fine. Our little baby was 22.5" long and 9.97lbs. He was a big boy and he was fine. Doc said they don't know what happened, everything looked good in the placenta and cord, the cord was a little short but on paper this should have been a perfect birth. My Pops hugged this man who saved his daughter and his first grandchild. We all did. The doctor asked us to go wait in the waiting room because my sister and her husband would be in the recovery room for a few hours. We walked towards it, relieved. I made more calls to let my brothers know that S. and baby were okay. We all sat feeling like lead.

I am trying really hard to remember not to judge people too harshly but I will say in these moments following I was exhausted and raw and still scared as we didn't know what would happen next and if something could go wrong still I judged these people in the waiting room with us. I thought they were the most obnoxious family. I thought they were loud, and trashy, and smelled bad, and fat, and horrible. They were talking about hating how long recovery took, about shopping at Walmart, about who they had slept with, baby mamas and baby daddies, about drinking too much and every subject you don't want to hear after fearing someone in your family might die. I wanted to scream "SHUT UP!" I wanted to take everything that I was feeling out on these people. I sat silent and felt rage build up. I texted back and forth with my sister G. about wanting to punch one of them. The matriarch of this family asked us if we were waiting for someone in recovery. I snapped that "my sister just had an emergency C-section and could have died so we're a little raw (inner monologue: and leave us alone thank you very much!)". The woman asked if we knew if they were out and ok, I said we heard they were in recovery we were just still a little nervous. She asked about the baby, I told her his stats in length and weight. She went on about how he was a big boy, he was from God, what an angel. I wanted to scream at this woman and hit her and rage towards her. I didn't. I sat silent. In this moment I judged her through eyes of anger and fear. Now I look back and think how wonderful that she tried to reach out, that she tried to connect, that she was being really human towards us. I've been in therapy for a few years now and this is something I should have applauded from her. She might have been scared too, she might have been reaching out to me so I would reach out to her. I didn't. I'm sorry to this woman for that. I am sorry for judging. I was scared. I shouldn't have judged in that moment and I did. I couldn't help it right then and I didn't recognize what I've learned through therapy about trying to connect to others through emotion because we're all human damn it, I just didn't. I'm sorry.

This family left after about an hour, they got to meet the new little in their life. It felt like a huge relief to us to have quiet, to have space. My sister S.'s step daughter and her grandmother showed up. We updated them on everything. We all waited. We drank coffee or pop to wake up a bit. My Pops fell asleep for a bit from the exhaustion of this all. My sister's husband came out, he told us how he never even made it into the surgery room before they got the baby out, how he is perfect, how my sister was out of it from the drugs and surgery and now pain relief drugs, we gave him a camera and asked him to bring us a picture of the baby, he left to snap some. We waited and started to chat a little. He came back with pictures of my perfect nephew, my Mustache Man, my little buddy baby, my Stasz (it's Polish for Stanley). He left to take care of my sister. We passed around the camera a million times to soak that baby in. Around 3AM they wheeled my sister to us on the way to her new room. We saw her and the baby for the first time. A huge rush over took me. They were safe, I could see for myself they were safe.

We rode the elevators to the room on the new floor. We rushed to hug her, to scoop that baby into our arms, there were so many tears of relief and joy and exhaustion, there were so many pictures taken and kisses and hugs given, so many flashes of the cameras, so many texts of pictures to my brothers not in that room, we sang happy birthday to our little man who wasn't ready to come out and fought to stay in. He was born 12/21/12. He is perfect and everyone was safe, everyone was fine, and everyone was healthy.

We went to my parents' home and crashed. We had been in MI for 2 days and all this had already happened. "What's next?" was all I could think as I cried in Joe's arms in that bed. I finally let it out and cried. I went to sleep after the stress of it all hit and I cried and it knocked me out for a few hours. I think I needed it.

More to come my dear chickens, more to come.

Partly Cloudy With a Chance of Life

So it is a bit behind but here is the finish up of my Month of Gratitude:

-The Polar Express makes me cry every time. Thankful to still have the Christmas spirit & hear the bells. ;) Day 25 in my Month of Gratitude.

-Today I am grateful for John Hughes and John Williams helping to create the magic of Home Alone 1 & 2 for my holidays. I love you gentlemen more than I can say. Thank you for my still giggling inner 8 year old. Day 26 in my Month of Gratitude.

-Today I am thankful that this day is finally over. That is all. Day 27 in my Month if Gratitude.

-Today I am grateful for caroling! Day 28 in my Month of Gratitude.

-Today I am grateful for Vicodin. And root beer. And good friends & people. Day 29 of my Month of Gratitude.

-Today I am thankful that on 12/1/84 at 1:32AM EST I was born & that in a few short hours it is officially my birthday in Michigan. I am 28. It's gonna be a great fucking year. Day 30 in my Month of Gratitude. CHALLENGE OVER! *drops mic*

Then my birthday happened, loads of well wishes on FB, a few texts and calls from family and close pals, only 5 people and their sig. others showed up to Joe & my birthday party which was a big bummer and disappointment since so many people had RSVPed yes (LA people are flakey, even those NOT from LA become flakey :( ), then we saw Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band at the Honda Center-IT WAS AMAZING, EPIC, FAN-DAMN-TASTIC, & Fucking AWESOME! We had the best time ever. Then I saw 2 hilarious shows (The Untold Story of Indie Rock & 227: The Lost Episodes) at Second City Hollywood-go see those ASAP! I worked a charity show at my internship for Toys for Tots which felt great. Then on Sunday we went to our pal's family's tree decorating party. We are the light crew and the village underneath the tree crew-we did another bang up job! So the week made up for the lack of awesome on the bday.

Now we're gearing up to go to MI for the holidays. Oh Christmas such a mixed bag usually. We end up really frustrated due to the fact that we feel torn all over the state. This time we're going back for 2 weeks, I get to meet my new nephew that is due to pop out any second, and we will get equal time with both our families since they are uber excited to see us married. Side note: once you're married other married people treat you differently. It doesn't matter that we've been together 7 years we've been married 2 months so we're adults or something now. So silly.

Hope your holidays are gearing up to be amazing! Lots of love chickens! :D

Sunny With a Chance of Thanksgiving!

So our Annual Friendsgiving was a blast! Great friends (old & new) came out to play and we served a feast for everyone. We like to provide all the food and just ask guests to bring beverages to share. And share they did! We had loads of wine, beer, spirits, juice, cider, coffee donated to the party-it was lovely. We served the following menu (all of which is 100% vegan):

Apps:
-sundried tomato dip with homemade bread
-herby tofu dip with homemade bread
-grilled cheeses (made with 3 different kinds of Daiya and homemade bread) & tomato basil soup shooters

Salads:
-Caesar salad with homemade dressing & croutons from scratch
-warm spinach salad with a maple balsamic dressing

Mains & Sides:
-vegan short ribs in & red wine sauce
-vegan pork chops with spinach, sundried tomato, & soy goat cheese schmear with gravy
-mashed potatoes and gravy
-Cuban style sweet potatoes
-sweet potato, banana, & pecan casserole
-garlicky green beans
-brussell sprouts with granny smith apples & red onions
-cranberry chutney
-chestnut stuffing

Desserts:
-homemade pumpkin pie with homemade crust & coconut whipped cream
-apple crisp with vanilla soy ice cream
-peach & blueberry crumble with vanilla soy ice cream
-almond thumbprint cookies with homemade raspberry jam

Needless to say EVERYONE was STUFFED. And it was all animal friendly & I adopted a turkey named Gable this year from Farm Sanctuary that everyone loved. We posted her story on the dessert table so everyone knew who they were supporting by eating a vegan Friendsgiving. We also have a tradition where you have to name at least one thing you are thankful for before you can eat and let me tell you they were wonderful things to be thankful for. I teared up a few times. I am grateful for such a wonderful holiday with friends! It was a blast and we cannot wait to do it again next year! :D

Here has been my week of gratitude posts:

Today I am thankful for officially being on Joe's insurance and submitting it to the doctor so the surgery can be submitted to the insurance company for approval. One step closer. Day 20 in my Month of Gratitude. [SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!]

Today I m thankful for silliness. It saves my life everyday to be silly and have silly people in my life. Anytime things have been hard (hello all year) the thing that makes me feel betters SILLY. Day 21 in my Month of Gratitude.

I am thankful for my pups who woke me with snuggles and kisses. I am thankful to be having surgery soon. I am thankful for a nephew due any day now. I am thankful for so many reasons today. Happy Thanksgiving to you all and know I carry my gratitude of you with me throughout the year! Day 22 in my Month of Gratitude.

Today I am thankful for days in bed, setting up our tree, watching White Christmas, snuggling my pups tight, and a husband who loves me. Pretty great day! Day 23 in my Month of Gratitude.

Today I am grateful for someone who indulges my love of all things Christmas. I bought 6 new holiday movies & he is supporting me about more from Amazon & Disney.com, buying a tree skirt, 3 stockings, more ornaments, bought snowflake placemats & and getting a wreath. Thankful he is patient with me about this obsession... Day 24 in my Month of Gratitude.

It's been a pretty great week off of a previously pretty great week (thanks to an amazing shoot with the one and only Michael Madsen and some amazing friends & crew mates). Cannot complain my dear chickens. Hope all is well with you in your worlds. Joe and I are now gearing up for our big birthday week (12/1 I am 28 & 12/5 Joey is 30!)-Disneyland and a big USO themed party. It should be a hoot of a time. Love you both so much. Day 18 in my Month of Gratitude.

Chilly With a Chance of 1 MONTH!

Here it is, 1 month-ish that we've been married. Here is what I am grateful for these days:

Today I am thankful for understanding. Having no voice is SO hard for me but people are being so understanding and sweet. And on a much larger scale I am grateful for understanding in general. That moment we all can choose to take to be empathetic and understanding towards one another's ideals, opinions, etc. Day 9 in my Month of Gratitude.

Today I am thankful for a day of rest. A full day of quiet snuggling, sleeping, and general taking it easy. Sometimes being totally sick reminds you to really take care of yourself. Day 10 in my Month of Gratitude.

Today I am grateful for my Pops in his birthday! You are the best dad a girl could ever ask for. You are supportive, understanding, encouraging, hilarious, smart, imaginative, and know when to push me. Thanks for making me who I am and for always believing me. Love you Pops! Day 11 in my Month if Gratitude.

Today I am grateful for all the veterans past (my grandfathers and uncles), present (my cousins and friends), & future. Also to my dear friends or their wonderful wedding gift of Mumford & Sons at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. Day 12 in my Month of Gratitude.

Today I am grateful for great friends who support and love me unconditionally. You are my other family. You keep me humble & grounded whilst keeping my head and dreams in the clouds. Thank you for loving me so completely and always saying "I love you." not "I love you but..." Day 13 in my Month of Gratitude.

So many, many things to be grateful for in my life! A very glad hearted gal am I dear chickens.
